With the increasing usage of smartphones, the mobile device has evolved into a personal pocket assistant helping the user to engage, collaborate and manage day-to-day activities in an efficient and cost-effective manner. The trend has quite caught up with users craving for utility-based applications.
A recent report from Informa Telecoms & Media estimates that over 130 app stores have already been deployed worldwide by companies, developers and device makers. Even operators like Bharti Airtel Ltd. and Aircel Ltd. have entered the application space.
At Light Reading India, we have compiled a list of some interesting utility (smartphone) applications that are believed to help users plan their day in a productive way. While the list was compiled based on our informal interactions with leading CIOs and industry experts, it is in no way the last word on popular utility applications.
Evernote
Evernote is believed to be one of the best productivity apps available today. The application aids users to collaborate and recall day-to-day activities using computer, phone, tablet and the net conveniently.
Though a bit old, the application offers good value to users and enables them to take, save and share notes with peers, do editing or add feedback. The search feature lets a user search through his notes and the Internet.
Evernote was launched in 2008 and the company claims that it has been used by around 12 million users worldwide.
Dropbox
Dropbox, a free application for android and iPhone users, helps people access files including photos, documents and videos across devices. The application, once downloaded, allows a user to automatically save a document to different devices like the computer, iPhone, etc, in addition to saving it online with the Dropbox account.
The application includes features like saving e-mail attachments and linking with different devices. It also powers users to check and browse regular data without getting hassled about taking it along manually every time.
Kindle Reader
Even though Kindle has launched its own computing device, one can still use the application and browse a collection of over 1,000,000 books in addition to hundreds of newspapers and magazines through a Kindle store.
The application allows users to read documents at their own convenience, highlight, take notes and auto-sync the last-page-read so that you can start reading from where you left off.
Expensify
This interesting utility application enables enterprises to reimburse employee expenses in a paperless environment. With Expensify, an employee can import expenses directly from the credit card and create an expense report quickly.
In addition, the entire sheet can be scanned or attached through e-mail and submitted.
1Password

Essentially, the app work as a vault allowing user to see the secure data created on the PC on the phone.
Wunderlist HD
Wunderlist is a free, multi-platform application with features like cloud sync, mail2task and e-mail reminders to help users organize day-to-day tasks and share lists with trusted people.
