The state-run, incumbent operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) collaborated with the communication solutions provider Shyam Networks to launch a third-generation (3G) WiFi router, Winknet Mf50, in India.
Launched under the reverse bundling agreement, the router will be retailed by both Shyam and BSNL through outlets and their own franchises. With the new router, BSNL subscribers can access the Internet from multiple points using the same SIM card - up to five users can access the Internet simultaneously using phone, laptops or personal computers. Under the promotional scheme, on buying the routers, a user can get an INR-60 voucher for 1 GB free data usage.
The router is priced at INR 5800 (US$106.12), but Shyam Networks has indicated that depending on the market dynamics, it may reduce the price later.
Its a SIM-locked device. We have 3G network in more than 960 cities/towns and we believe that the launch will help our subscribers get a great 3G experience at an affordable price, comments R K Upadhayay, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL.
BSNL hopes to get new 3G subscribers with this launch. So far, the uptake of 3G has been disappointing in the country and so the operators have been evaluating strategies and wooing customers with exciting promotional schemes. Almost all major operators in the country slashed their 3G data prices by over 70 percent in the last few months. However, the industry needs many such initiatives to take the 3G growth to the desired level.
