Bharti Airtel Ltd., Vodafone Essar, Department of Telecommunications, Qualcomm Inc. and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) are today's leading news makers.

Bharti Airtel has increased its international call rate tariffs by up to 10 percent for selected destinations and cut down some benefits on add-on services for its pre-paid subscribers, reports The Times of India. The company has taken this move to combat the growing financial pressure in the telecom sector. (See Bharti's New Experience and IndiaWatch: Telcos Rejig, Layoff Fears Loom.)

Vodafone Essar (aka Vodafone India) has appealed to the Telecom Dispute Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) in an effort to counter the INR 500 million (US$9.8 million) penalty imposed by the Department of Telecom over its distribution deal with Matrix telecom, reports The Hindu Business Line. According to DoT, Matrix Cellular had rented out bulk connections taken from Vodafone and then re-sold them with its own billing plans without any subscriber verification.

Still with Vodafone India, its managing director Marten Pieters has stated that the operator is ready to start preparing for an IPO and believes mobile operator sector consolidation is likely within the next two years, reports The Economic Times.

The dispute over the allocation of BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) spectrum to Qualcomm rumbles on without resolution, though the DoT's Wireless Planning & Coordination team has been told it must make a ruling so that the DoT can announce a final decision on December 2, writes The Hindu Business Line. TRAI is set to unveil new consumer complaint guidelines by the end of this month in an effort to help customers resolve grievances against telecom companies, reports The Economic Times.
