There is never a dull moment in the Indian telecommunications industry and the action just got a bit more exciting. Telecom equipment company, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and operator, Videocon Telecommunications Ltd. have filed a legal case on each other. (See Business Standard.)
Videocon claims that Huawei supplied them with poor network equipment and services and has filed a suit of $180 million (INR 10 billion) for the same. Huawei, on the other hand, has sent a legal notice to Videocon for $150 million (INR 8.2 billion) of unpaid dues.
Videocon's legal notice attacks Huawei where it hurts the most. As a Chinese vendor they are always under attack for providing low-quality equipment at a cheap price. This legal notice spells only more trouble for the company.
However, the timing of the legal battle is interesting to say the least. Just when Huawei had sent a notice to Videocon to clear its dues, the latter decided to retaliate by blaming them for poor quality network equipment and services.
It remains to be seen whether the companies would settle the matter outside the court or will decide to wash the dirty linen in public. Whatever might be the case, it promises to be an exciting battle with blame and counter blame. Watch this space for more!!
